Choose the right California trip
California covers very different travel experiences. A car-free island break, a coastal town and a mountain road trip each need their own plan. Use these guides to choose your base before booking.
| Trip style | Start here | Plan first |
|---|---|---|
| Walkable island escape | Catalina Island | Ferry arrival port and where to stay |
| National park adventure | Channel Islands | Boat landing, tour location and camping availability |
| Quiet Central Coast stop | Cayucos | Your road trip route and overnight base |
| Family coastal break | Carlsbad | Attraction opening dates and beach versus resort location |
| Mountain and lake road trip | Lake Tahoe | Season, road conditions and north versus south shore |

A rental car can help with a mainland road trip, but visitors do not need one for a stay in walkable Avalon. National park boat bookings are a separate decision from accommodation on the mainland. Match transport to your itinerary rather than adding it automatically.
Before booking seasonal activities or mountain travel, check the operator’s current schedule and the relevant park or road authority.
